A. Why Christians struggle with death – even fear it

1. We were created to live; death is unfamiliar.  (Gen 2.7)

2. Death is real; death is sin’s inescapable penalty.  (Gen 3.19)  (cf. Rom 1.32; 5.12; 6.23a)

3. Believers don’t get to determine when/how we die; death reminds us we do not own the number of our  days.  (Ps 139.16)  (cf. Job 14.5; Acts 17.25, 28)

4. There is great mystery in crossing over; we do not know what the journey from death to life looks like  (1 Cor 15.51-52)

5. Death is final; death grants no do-overs (Heb 9.27)  (cf. Lk 16.26)

B. Why Christians can face death with grief and gladness

1. Because Jesus is present at the moment of passing (Matt 28.20b)

2. Because God works all things for our good (Rom 8.28)

3. Because death cannot separate us from God (Rom 8.38-39)

4. Because death is not the end (1 Cor 15.26)  (cf. John 3.16; Rom 6.23b)

5. Because death has lost its sting; death has been swallowed up in victory (1 Cor 15.55)

6. Because to be absent from the body is to be present with God (2 Cor 5.6-8) (cf. Rev 21.3)

7. Because death brings culmination to salvation (Eph 1.13-14) (cf. 1 Pet 1.9)

8. Because God finishes what He starts (Phil 1.6; Rom 8.29-30)

9. Because to be with Christ is better than being in the world (Phil 1.21 & 23)

10. Because to die “in Christ” is a promise that I will rise again “like Christ” (Phil 3.10-11) (cf. 1 Jn 3.2)

11. Because believers do not grieve like unbelievers (1 Thes 4.13)

12. Because one day there will be a reunion with Jesus and all who belong to Him (1 Thes 4.16-17)

13. Because there is a crown of righteousness laid up for every genuine believer (2 Tim 4.8) (cf. Rev 2.10)

14. Because at death, believers will finally & fully receive the eternal rest that’s only mildly experienced in this life (Heb 4.9-11)  (cf. Matt 11.28-29)

15. Because God has prepared an eternal community for His saints (Heb 11.16)

16. Because God has provided something for His saints that is better than this world (Heb 11.40) (cf. 1 Cor 2.9)

17. Because God does not abandon your soul when you die (Heb 13.5) (cf. Ps 16.10-11)

18. Because those who die in Christ are blessed with rest from their labors (Rev 14.13) (cf. Rev 6.11)

19. Because to die “in Christ” is to live forevermore in the presence of God (Rev 21.3)

20. Because dying means the end of sadness and suffering and sin (Rev 21.4) (cf. Rev 22.3)
